If I write in my MSN or Yahoo blog do I own the writing, as if I wrote a book or article, or do the rights of usage and disposal of the material written on a free blog get usurped by the blog provider?
One Response to “Who owns the copyrights to free blogs?”

As a general matter, you own the copyright to the material you write. However, most blogs have a terms and services that agree to when you register. This terms and services may entitle them to at least some sort of non-exclusive license that allows them certain rights. Your first step should be to review your blog provder’s terms and services.
Now, I should mention that the legality of the language in many of these terms and services is still a legal question that hasn’t been fully litigated. If you are concerned about what the blog provider will do with your work, you may consider buying your own domain and hosting the blog yourself.
